Lake View Chiefs Look to Slow Down Andrews in Regular-Season Finale

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs will close out the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday on the road against Andrews.

Lake View is locked into the No. 4 seed out of District 3-4A Division I regardless of the outcome.

If the Chiefs’ first two district games had played out just a bit differently, this would be a district-title game. However, a 45-37 overtime loss to Pecos and a 28-21 loss to Big Spring knocked the Chiefs out of contention.

Lake View will be in for a challenge this week trying to slow down Andrews’ running game, which is led by Jaesean Debouse, who has 1,244 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The Mustangs have attempted only 27 passes all season.

“They run the ball so much, they’ll catch you sleeping when they throw the ball,” Lake View head coach Hector Guevara said. “It’s hard for any team to prepare for. They do a good job, so we’ve got to do our best to be sound.”

Lake View has averaged 30 points per game this season, so the Chiefs’ best defense could be their offense.

“Offensively, I think we match up well,” Guevara said. “I think we can make some things happen. We’ve just got to take what they give us.”

Lake View lost its best offensive lineman, Trey Henry, to injury just before district play began. The Chiefs have also been without running back Sammy Ramirez in district play.

Izaiah Rios has helped fill the void in the running game. He had eight carries for 89 yards last year, and he had the clutch 41-yard field goal against Pecos that sent the game to overtime.

“Izaiah’s a good athlete. We knew he could jump in and get it done. He stepped in when we needed him, and he’s done a great job,” Guevara said.

In the opening round of the playoffs, Lake View will draw the top seed from District 4-4A, which is No. 4-ranked Stephenville.
