OXFORD, MISS — Former San Angelo Lake View quarterback John David Baker is set to be named the new offensive coordinator at Ole Miss, according to numerous reports.
Baker, a 2009 graduate of Lake View High School, served as the OC this past season at East Carolina, where he helped the Pirates to an 8-4 record.
Baker previously coached at Ole Miss in 2021-22 as the tight ends coach and passing game coordinator. He was promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2022.
It has been a remarkable rise up the coaching ranks for Baker since he left San Angelo.
After playing college football at Abilene Christian University, he served as a graduate assistant at the school before landing his first job as an offensive quality control coach at the University of North Texas.
He then went to one of the most storied programs in the country when he was hired for the same role at USC before being promoted to tight ends coach.
Baker rejoins an Ole Miss program that is led by Pete Golding, who is rebuilding the coaching staff after many of them left with Lane Kiffin for LSU.
Ole Miss is ranked No. 6 in the country and will play No. 11 Tulane in the first round of the college football playoffs Dec. 20.
Baker is known by San Angelo fans as one of the best quarterbacks in the city’s history.
He led Lake View to its first playoff win in 12 years in 2008, throwing for 2,240 yards and 22 touchdowns, while rushing for 688 yards and 18 TDs.
He was also a standout pitcher for the Lake View’s baseball team.
At ACU, he had a sensational senior year with 3,376 passing yards and 35 TDs, along with 246 rushing yards and five scores.
Now that he has one of the top assistant jobs at one of the most high-profile schools in the country, Baker could very well be a head coach at his next stop.
