SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are the best games, biggest wins and top performers from last week’s high school football action in West Texas:
Best game: Lake View-Pecos
Fans at San Angelo Stadium were treated to a back-and-forth battle between Lake View and Pecos on Friday. Lake View’s Izaiah Rios kicked a 41-yard field goal in the final seconds to force overtime, but Pecos came out on top 45-37.
Biggest win: Water Valley
The Water Valley Wildcats were able to reclaim their spot as district champs in their first year back in the six-man game with a 62-50 win over Robert Lee. Water Valley can now enjoy a bye week before its regular-season finale at Paint Rock. Then it’s on to the playoffs, where the Wildcats’ No. 1 district seed will give them a more favorable path.
Biggest surprise: Mason-Holland
In a matchup of 6-1 teams, it looked like Mason’s district-title streak might be in jeopardy against Holland. Instead, the Punchers flexed their muscles with a 61-15 win. They still haven’t lost a district game since 2010.
Climbing the rankings: Wall, Mason, Junction
Three football teams in our coverage made a move in this week’s state rankings. Wall is up to No. 5 in Class 3A Division II, Mason is No. 7 in 2A D-I, and Junction debuted at No. 10 in 2A D-II.
Richland Springs remained at No. 2 in 1A D-II.
Statewide recognition: Ozona’s Michael Daniels
Daniels is one of 10 nominees for the Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week award after his performance last week against Colorado City.
He had 15 carries for 148 yards and two touchdowns, along with nine catches for 164 yards and four TDs. He also had 14 tackles on defense.

Case for the defense: Miles
There’s rarely a shortage of offensive highlights for the Miles Bulldogs. Their defense showed it was capable of in a 41-0 win over Hamlin, which entered the game with a 5-2 record.
Strong in defeat: Robert Lee
The Robert Lee Steers’ 62-50 loss to Water Valley cost them a chance at a district title, but it should give the Steers confidence they can play with the top teams in the state. Robert Lee could be a dangerous district runner-up in the playoffs, but first they’ll have to get past Veribest on Friday in a game to decide the district’s second and final playoff spot.
