United Blood Services of the Concho Valley announced Friday that its supply on hand of O Negative blood type is dangerously low. "Everyone should be alarmed by this - O Negative is the universal blood type that anyone can be safely transfused with - critically important to trauma patients when there is no time to perform the blood typing test," said to Linda Grace, Senior Donor Recruitment Representative with United Blood Services. Most blood shortages occur during or after holiday weekends like Labor Day Weekend when the need for blood goes up and donations drop off.
Donors are needed to replenish the Concho Valley blood supply. In addition, platelet donors are needed. Platelets can be donated at the donation center and are used by surgery, leukemia and trauma patients. Platelets have a five-day shelf life. All blood types are welcome.
