SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University's Jazz Ensembles program will present its first concert of the fall season on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. in the Brooks & Bates Theatre at the San Angelo Performing Arts Center, 82 Gillis St. in downtown San Angelo.
Titled "Latin Jazz," the concert will feature the ASU Big Band and is free and open to the public. The theme highlights the rich and dynamic rhythms of a genre that merges Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and other Latin American styles with the improvisational freedom of jazz. Audiences will be treated to a vibrant and rhythmic experience as the ASU Big Band explores the work of Latin jazz legends.
The concert will feature ASU's top jazz musicians, an array of instrumental solos, and special guest vocalist Tennley Wilson, an ASU music/vocal major. Attendees can expect to hear a wide range of iconic pieces that highlight the fusion of jazz with Latin rhythms, including mambo, salsa, samba and bossa nova.
The ASU Big Band is made up of about 20 student musicians performing on saxophones, trumpets, trombones and tuba, as well as a full rhythm section. It is a component of the ASU Jazz Ensembles program and is directed by Dr. Trent Shuey, assistant director of bands.
The ASU Jazz Ensembles program offers diverse and creative, small- and large-group jazz performance experiences. It covers a wide range of styles, including bebop, Latin jazz, free jazz, funk, hip hop and many others. ASU is proud to offer performances in this uniquely American art form.
