Friday Night Rewind: Best Games, Biggest Wins and Top Performers From Last Week

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are the best games, biggest wins and top performers from last week’s high school football action in West Texas:

Biggest win: Ozona

The Ozona Lions rallied from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to knock off Miles 34-28 on homecoming night in Ozona. It was the first loss of the year for Miles, which was ranked No. 8 in Class 2A Division II. Ozona is now 4-1 with a big boost of momentum heading into the start of District 3-2A Division I play next week.

1,000-yard club: Christian Villarreal

With 233 yards Friday, Ozona running back Christian Villarreal eclipsed the 1,000-yard after just five weeks. He has 1,106 yards and 14 TDs in a spectacular start to the season.

Best game: Iraan-Reagan County

In a battle of unbeaten teams, Iraan and Reagan County put on a show that Iraan won in overtime 34-28 on Tristan Griffin’s TD run. Reagan County forced OT by scoring with one second left in regulation. Moving forward, both of these teams should be contenders for district titles.

Best finish: Robert Lee-Sands

Robert Lee’s Brenner Sherwood scored on a 2-yard run with 5 seconds remaining to lift the Steers to a 78-74 win over Sands. Robert Lee scored twice in the final 4:31 to pull off a comeback from a 74-62 deficit.

Biggest surprise: Wall

Winning is nothing new for the Wall Hawks, but the manner in which they did so last week was a bit of a surprise. Wall rallied from a 21-6 deficit to rout Sweetwater 42-21. The Hawks have often won on the strength of their defense, but quarterback Landon York threw for 321 yards to lead Wall’s best offensive showing of the year.

Case for the defense: San Angelo Central

The Bobcats’ much-maligned defense, which allowed 46 points per game last year, has made remarkable strides the last two weeks. Central has posted back-to-back games allowing single digits in wins over Belton (33-8) and Waco (37-6). Bigger challenges await in District 2-6A, which begins next week, but these performances should give Central confidence.

Under the radar: Brady

The Brady Bulldogs didn’t have much hype heading into the season after last year’s 3-8 campaign. Yet they’ve impressed early with a 4-1 record, including last week’s 42-28 win over Ingram Moore. The Bulldogs also have a high-scoring win over Ozona and a shutout against Ballinger. Brady wasn’t picked to make the playoffs by Texas Football magazine before the year, but they sure look like contenders heading into the start of District 5-3A Division II play next week.

Last man standing: Richland Springs

The Richland Springs Coyotes are our last undefeated team as we hit the halfway point of the regular season. Richland Springs hasn’t been tested yet as all five of its wins have been by the 45-point mercy rule. The No. 2-ranked Coyotes may not be slowed until the playoffs begin as they take aim at their program’s 10th state title.

Cooper Ellison, Miles: Had 12 catches for 235 yards and four TDs in a loss to Ozona

Kason Brown, Reagan County: Had nine catches for 115 yards in a loss to Iraan

Chris Johnson, Reagan County: Had 16 carries for 100 yards and three TDs, along with 10 tackles and an INT in a loss to Iraan

Brenner Sherwood, Robert Lee: Threw for 249 yards and four TDs on 16-of-27 passing, had 19 carries for 184 yards and three TDs, and recorded 11 tackles in a win over Sands

Jaxon Tavarez, Robert Lee: Had eight carries for 62 yards and three TDs, along with six catches for 62 yards and two TDs in a win over Sands

Johnny Menefield, Brady: Had 15 carries for 141 yards and a TD, along with 12 tackles and a forced fumble in a win over Ingram Moore

Ashton Taylor, Brady: Had 17 carries for 105 yards in a win over Ingram Moore

Aiden Pena, Ballinger: Had 17 carries for 96 yards and two TDs in a loss to Stanton

Bryce Lopez, Ballinger: Had 12 catches for 170 yards and a TD in a loss to Stanton

Jasi Galindo, Eldorado: Had 19 carries for 113 yards and two TDs, and two catches for 89 yards and a TD in a win over Harper

Johnnie Rae Adame, Eldorado: Threw for 232 yards and two TDs on 14-of-23 passing in a win over Harper

Anthony Quintana, Water Valley: Had 13 carries for 164 yards and two TDs, and three catches for 51 yards and a TD in a win over Rochelle

Landon Lacy, Water Valley: Threw for 128 yards and five TDs on 8-of-15 passing, and had 10 carries for 68 yards and two TDs in a win over Rochelle

Christian English, San Angelo Central: Threw for 210 yards and a TD on 21-of-30 passing, and had two TD runs in a win over Waco
