CHRISTOVAL, TX — Basketball season is well underway, and the Christoval Lady Cougars are off to an impressive start but somehow unranked again.
While the Lady Cougars lost quite a bit of talent to graduation and their head coach to Granbury, they have been putting in the work on the hardwood and are currently 18-5.
The Lady Cougars have lost to four ranked teams:
- Cisco (No. 4 in 2A) — 46-22
- Mason (No. 2 in 2A) — 61-43
- Eula (No. 1 in 1A) — 51-28
- Fredericksburg (No. 14 in 4A) — 37-35
Christoval also lost to an 18-5 Blackwell team by a score of 37-35.
Meanwhile, the Lady Cougars have beaten the following ranked teams:
- Sweetwater (No. 12 in 3A) — 44-38
- Ozona (No. 24 in 2A) — 59-50
- Westbrook (No. 13 in 1A) — 57-26
- Jayton (No. 22 in 1A) — 57-35
While the team and coach might not care about the state rankings, it certainly is a black eye to ignore the Lady Cougars again.
Last year, Christoval was on a tear and ended up 28-8. They upset No. 5 Whiteface in the second round of the playoffs and then lost to No. 3 Farwell 50-47 in the third round. Farwell went on to lose in overtime of the state final.
Christoval beat ranked team after ranked team last season, and two of the Lady Cougars' losses were to Farwell. They also lost to ranked teams from bigger classifications like Brock, Seminole, Canyon and Jim Ned, but they were somehow never ranked.
Whoever ranks the 2A teams seems to have something against Christoval that has continued to this season.
The Lady Cougars are on a six-game winning streak and have won 10 of their last 11. They're also 3-0 in district. They just finished up the Jayton Tournament, where they beat Westbrook, Jayton, Ira and Hawley.
On Jan. 6, Christoval is back in district play at 6:30 p.m. on the road against Sterling City.
