SAN ANGELO, TX — Win or lose, the Lake View Chiefs’ ability to put up points had been something the team could count on the first three weeks this year.
Last week, they faced their first real adversity in that department.
Lake View, which was averaging 39 points per game, was held in check in a 31-13 loss to Lubbock High.
The Chiefs (1-3) will try to get back on track when they travel to play Levelland (2-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.
“Our kids’ effort was awesome,” Lake View head coach Hector Guevara said of last week’s loss. “They battled all the way through, and we had a chance until early in the fourth quarter. The kids didn’t give up. It was just one of those games where we couldn’t get anything rolling after the first quarter.”
Sophomore quarterback Chris Alvizo, who was stellar in his first two starts with 690 passing yards and nine touchdowns, was contained by Lubbock High’s defense.
He finished with 114 yards on 13-of-27 passing with two TDs and one interception, which was returned for a score.
“He’s done a good job. Obviously, he’s learning and we’re going to hit some bumps in the road. That’s our job to pick him up,” Guevara said.
Lake View did have an encouraging showing with its rushing attack, led by Sammy Ramirez, who had 11 carries for 136 yards.
“It was good to see our running game come alive a little bit,” Guevara said. “The line did a good job leading the way.”
Levelland hasn’t had more than two wins in a season since 2019, but the Loboes are off to a 2-2 start. They have wins over Pecos (23-12) and Brownfield (38-0), and losses to Dalhart (55-27) and Idalou (33-16).
The Loboes are led by quarterback Boston Winfield, who has thrown for 786 yards and nine TDs with two INTs. Levelland’s rushing attack, however, has managed only 325 yards.
Lake View and Levelland have played 11 times since their first meeting in 1964. The rivalry went dormant for nearly two decades before it was revived in 2022.
Levelland has won the last two meetings, including a 32-13 win last year.
After a trip to the Hill Country town of Burnet next week, Lake View will return home to play Brownfield on Oct. 11. The Chiefs won’t begin district play until Oct. 25 at home against Pecos.
