NEW YORK, NY - A judge has delayed former President Donald Trump’s sentencing in his criminal hush money case from September 18 to November 26, after the 2024 presidential election.
Trump had been attempting for months to push back his sentencing in the case, where he was found guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a hush payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign.
The decision, issued in a court filing on Friday, means Trump will not face legal consequences before voters cast their ballots. The ruling was made by Judge Juan Merchan, who also scheduled a November 12 date to rule on Trump’s motion to set aside the verdict.
Trump is arguing for dismissal of the case on the grounds of presidential immunity, referencing a Supreme Court ruling that grants immunity for official acts undertaken while in office. Judge Merchan expressed concern about the public’s confidence in the judiciary and stated that delaying sentencing was necessary to avoid any appearance that the case is affecting the upcoming election.
Merchan criticized Trump for causing the delays himself, noting that had Trump been sentenced as originally planned on July 11, no conflict would have existed.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and said he plans to appeal the decision.
