BARROW COUNTY, GA – A 14-year-old suspect is in custody following a shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, leaving 2 students, and 2 teachers dead.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that nine more victims were injured in the shooting and taken to local hospitals.
Authorities reported that a teenage suspect was taken into custody after surrendering to school resource officers. Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey identified him as 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at Apalachee High School.
The GBI clarified that initial reports indicating a suspect had been “neutralized” were inaccurate.
Hosey announced that Gray will face murder charges and be tried as an adult.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith confirmed at a news conference that there were “multiple injuries” but refrained from sharing additional details, noting that it would take “multiple days” to fully understand what happened.
“Every minute, it’s developing on what we’re finding,” he said.
Smith also mentioned that authorities are focused on reuniting students with their parents following the “evil thing” that occurred at the school.
Videos during the shooting have been released on many X posts.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp stated he has "directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School.
The governor urged “all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.”
Apalachee High School is on a hard lockdown and students were evacuated.
There are no reports of secondary incidents or scenes.
According to U.S. News & World Report, the school has about 1,900 students enrolled and is one of two high schools in the Barrow County Public Schools district.
Barrow County is about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta.
