LUBBOCK, TX — Former San Angelo Central quarterback Maverick McIvor threw for over 500 yards Saturday as Abilene Christian University nearly pulled off an improbable upset of Texas Tech.
McIvor completed 36 of 51 passes for 506 yards and three touchdowns, but the Wildcats lost 52-51 in overtime after they tried to win on a two-point conversion.
It would have been the biggest win in program history for ACU.
For McIvor, his spectacular performance at Jones AT&T Stadium was where he had envisioned playing his college ball all along. He accepted a scholarship from Tech after a breakout junior season with the Central Bobcats.
It’s amazing to consider that McIvor began his high school career playing six-man football at Fort Davis before he moved to San Angelo after his freshman year.
An injury sidelined McIvor for nearly all of his senior year at Central, and injuries at Tech pushed him out of the QB conversation, prompting him to transfer to ACU.
McIvor became the third ACU quarterback to throw more than 500 yards in a game, and he was the first to do so against a NCAA Division I opponent.
