COLORADO CITY, TX— The Reagan County Owls met the Olney Cubs at Wolf Stadium in Colorado City and emerged victorious, 32-0.
The Onley Cubs started off the game with a gutsy call, an onside kick. The Cubs recovered the football, but Reagan County didn’t back down. They held Onley on their first drive and when Owl’s quarterback Kason Brown and the offense took to the field, they threw a touchdown pass to Nick Franklin who took the ball 50-yards on his first catch of the 2024 season.
The Owls ended the first quarter up 8-0 after a good 2-point conversion.
Into the second quarter, some tomfoolery occurred as Olney’s quarterback Camron McComack could get ahold of the snap and fumbled the ball, which the Owls recovered. Only thing is, the refs did not call it a fumble and the Cubs retained possession.
Again, the Owls did not back down. McComack loaded up a pass to the endzone, but Kason Brown was waiting at the goal line to pick it off in the endzone.
The Owls would drive again and end up with about a 30-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Omrie Johnson in the back of the endzone. With another good 2-point conversion, the Owls extended their lead, 16-0.
With the Cubs driving again before the half, McComack tossed the ball to his left right into Reagan County’s Lyric Hollard’s hands for another interception. Nothing would come on the Owls next drive before halftime.
With time running out until the school bands took to the field, the Cubs were driving again. McComack threw another deep ball down the field, but Kason Brown was there again to pick it off as time ran out. The Owls went into halftime up, 16-0.
Into the second half, and the Owls have the ball, Kason Brown launched one down the Cub’s sideline, which gets deflected. The ball hung in the air just long enough for Caison Graves to pluck it and run the rest of the way for another Owl’s touchdown. Another good 2-point conversion and the Owls are up big time, 24-0.
If three interceptions and the fumble of all fumbles in the history of fumbles that wasn’t call a fumble didn’t rip the souls out of the Cubs, the ensuing kickoff did. The Owls kicked the ball into a void on the field and recovered the kick. Reagan County's offense took the field yet again and running back Chris Johnson ran in a score from about 14-yards out and also secured the 2-point conversion to put Reagan County up, 32-0.
With time running out to get something positive, Olney threw another deep pass as time expired that fell incomplete and the Reagan County Owls got the first win of their season. New defensive coordinator Willie Rangel received a shower from his players on the field as his defense pitched a shutout.
Defensively, the Owls were bringing the heat with every hit and has several turnovers.
Offensively, Reagan County is explosive, and no lead would feel secure as they can put up points in a hurry if need be. They did have two touchdowns called back due to penalties. Things will get cleaned up and the Owls looked good on opening night.
The Reagan County Owls get a shot next week against the Grape Creek Eagles in Grape Creek on September 6, 2024.
