San Angelo ISD Board Approves $6 Million Funding Proposal for November Ballot

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a 6-0 vote to call Proposition A, also known as the Tax Rate Election (TRE), for the November 5, 2024 ballot.

“I want to thank our board of trustees and staff for all their hard work over the last several months to bring us to this point,” Superintendent Dr. Chris Moran said. “We remain dedicated to our mission to engage all students in a relevant and inspiring education that produces future-ready graduates."

Since 2019, the State of Texas has not provided any additional funding for school districts - even with inflation at record highs, information from San Angelo ISD states.

"This puts constraints on the district’s buying power to continue providing a safe, supportive, and secure environment in San Angelo ISD," the information read.

According to the school district, Prop A will ask voters to approve or disapprove the tax rate adopted by the Board of Trustees. If passed, it will allow the district to access the maximum amount of revenue from "golden pennies," which is not subject to recapture and will remain in the district.

The board decided to focus on funding two major areas including:

  • Recruit & Retain High-Quality Staff
  • Armed Officer at Every Campus

With the passage of Prop A, the recently approved $0.81231 district tax rate will not increase for homeowners in San Angelo ISD.

The official ballot language says the proposal will generate an additional $2 million, but that is just from local taxpayers. Prop A will also require the state to kick in over $4 million to San Angelo ISD, for a total of $6 million in additional revenue, annually, information states.

More information about Proposition A will be available on San Angelo ISD's website at www.saisd.org/PropA.

“We will be reaching out to all registered voters in the district in multiple ways, including direct mail, social media, and digital advertising,” Moran said. “The district has a responsibility to make sure our voters have the factual information about Prop A so they can make an informed decision at the polls.”
