Heat Advisory Issued for San Angelo Region

 

SAN ANGELO, TX – The National Weather Service in San Angelo has issued a heat advisory for several counties in the region, effective from 1 p.m. Wednesday to 7 p.m. Thursday.

The advisory covers Fisher, Nolan, Sterling, Coke, Runnels, Irion, Tom Green, Concho, Haskell, Throckmorton, Jones, Shackelford, Taylor, Callahan, Coleman, Brown, McCulloch, and San Saba counties. Residents in these areas, including cities such as San Angelo, Abilene, and Brownwood, should prepare for temperatures ranging between 105 and 109 degrees.

The extreme heat is anticipated to pose significant health risks, with the potential for heat illnesses. The public is urged to take necessary precautions to stay safe.

Precautionary Measures:

  • Stay Indoors: Remain in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible.
  • Hydrate: Drink water more frequently than usual and avoid dehydrating beverages like alcohol, sugary drinks, or caffeine.
  • Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.
  • Eat Small Meals: Consume small meals more often.
  • Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Monitor those who are more susceptible to heat, such as young children and the elderly. Check on family, friends, and neighbors regularly.
  • Avoid Outdoor Activities: If outdoor activities are necessary, take longer and more frequent breaks and avoid the hottest parts of the day.

Health Risks:

  • Heat Stroke: Recognize the signs of heat stroke and treat it as an emergency. Call 911 immediately.
  • Vehicle Safety: Never leave children or pets in enclosed vehicles, even for a few minutes, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures quickly.
