SAN ANGELO, TX — When the clock strikes midnight on Sunday night, workouts can officially begin for the 2024 high school football season in Texas.
Monday, Aug. 5, marks the opening day of workouts for the majority of teams in the state, though Class 6A and 5A schools that participated in spring workouts have to wait until Aug. 12 to get started.
For many Texas towns, there will be field houses and practice fields buzzing with activity Monday.
Some teams even hold "midnight madness" events, so they can begin practicing the first moment they're allowed to by UIL rules.
The term "two-a-days" is synonymous with the start of football workouts, but the UIL actually prohibits teams from holding multiple workouts a day the first five days, and contact isn't allowed until the sixth day.
Even when two practices can he held in a day, teams aren't allowed to do so on consecutive days.
The first scrimmages can be held as early as Thursday, Aug. 15.
The first games of the season will kick off Thursday, Aug. 29.
In San Angelo, Central will host Abilene High on Friday, Aug. 30, while Lake View will travel to Fort Stockton, and TLCA will visit Tahoka.
