LAS VEGAS, NV — A 38-year-old man from Humble, Texas, has etched his name in the annals of poker history by winning the 2024 World Series of Poker Main Event and the $10 million top prize.
Jonathan Tamayo, an avid golfer and daily fantasy sports enthusiast, triumphed over Jordan Griff in a heads-up match to claim the prestigious title.
Tamayo’s victory, marked by a final hand of 8-3 offsuit, came on Wednesday night at the Horseshoe Las Vegas Event Center.
The decisive moment unfolded on the 235th hand of the final table and the 65th of heads-up play. After flopping two pair, Tamayo bet 10 million on a nine-high flop, prompting Griff to raise to 40 million. Tamayo then moved all-in, and Griff called for 230 million with top pair.
Tamayo’s two pair held strong through the turn and river, securing his victory and the diamond-encrusted gold bracelet.
Tamayo stood as the last player remaining from a record-breaking field of 10,112 participants.
Days earlier, he had folded two queens to a single raise at the unofficial final table, a move that sparked widespread discussion in the poker community.
Now, Tamayo joins the ranks of poker legends.
San Angelo was actually home to the 1975 WSOP Main Event Champion when Brian "Sailor" Roberts bested a field of 21 players to win $210,000.
