Update on Death of Young Giraffe at Abilene Zoo

SAN ANGELO, TX— In April, a two year old giraffe named Makena, died and now there has been an update on her death.

In a Facebook post, the Abilene Zoo said:

"Our lead veterinarian, Dr. Mike Nance, has provided a beautiful letter talking about Makena's life and explaining the results we received. Makena was very loved and cared for by our staff and community."

Dr. Nance posted "A Heartfelt Goodbye" where he states he was there when Makena was born and watched her grow until her death.

Also, in the letter, it says that on April 8, 2024, the zoo keepers arrived and found Makena deceased. They sent off her tissues to a zoo pathologist who returned with only questions as it appears Makena just suddenly died.
