Majority of Texans Support Legalizing Pot for Adult Use

SAN ANGELO, TX — A recent statewide poll revealed that 60% of Texas adults now support legalizing cannabis for adult use, marking the first time a solid majority has been recorded on this issue.

The poll, conducted by the Texas Lyceum, highlights growing bipartisan support for cannabis legalization, even in traditionally conservative states.

The 18th annual Texas Lyceum Poll indicates a significant shift in public opinion, with a 14% increase in support since the question was last asked in 2015. At that time, a majority of voters (50%) opposed legalization.

"Overall, 60% of Texas adults say that they support legalizing the use of marijuana in Texas, a 14-point increase since the question was last asked in 2015," the poll reported. In addition, 57% of Texans expressed support for expanding legal casino gambling, while 28% opposed it.

Reports show that only older adults, Republicans, and self-identified conservatives showed division on the issue. Among Texans over 65 and Republicans, 49% support legalization, while 46% of conservatives are in favor. Conversely, 31% of conservatives oppose cannabis legislation.

Interestingly, the opposition to legalization often stems from a preference for decriminalization. Among those who oppose legalization, 42% would support decriminalizing possession of small amounts, opting for citations and fines instead of criminal charges.

The Texas Lyceum Poll also explored various topics, including politics, religion, housing, and space exploration. Additionally, the poll revealed growing support for gambling in Texas.

This November, the Texas Lyceum will hold a conference titled “Win, Lose or Draw: The Future of Marijuana and Gambling in the Lone Star State” on South Padre Island.

Currently, Texas allows low-THC cannabis for eligible patients under the state’s compassionate use program, established in 2015. This program was expanded in 2021 to include patients with all forms of PTSD and cancer, in addition to those with seizure disorders and multiple sclerosis.
