San Angelo Women Indicted for Stabbing Man with a Prison Shank

SAN ANGELO — Two women from San Angelo face charges after allegedly attacking a man with a knife last December, according to court documents.

Shevetra Mathis, 25, and Ebony Gasca, 26, were indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon stemming from the incident.

The altercation unfolded on December 26, 2023, in the 300 block of West 13th Street, leading to the death of Jermaine Johnson, who succumbed to two stab wounds at Shannon Medical Center.

According to an arrest affidavit, San Angelo police responded to a call reporting an unknown problem and found Johnson suffering from stab wounds in a driveway. He was discovered struggling to breathe, but attempts to save him were unsuccessful.

Gasca, in an interview, identified Johnson as her boyfriend and recounted a verbal altercation at their residence that escalated as they headed to a local Dollar General. Allegedly, Johnson struck Gasca in the face, prompting her to retaliate.

Upon returning to the residence, a dispute ensued over Gasca's cellphone, which Johnson allegedly refused to return. Gasca armed herself with a homemade knife, attempting to retrieve her phone, and a physical confrontation ensued.

Gasca claimed Johnson placed her in a chokehold during the scuffle, prompting her to stab him twice before Mathis, her alleged accomplice, intervened and also allegedly stabbed Johnson.

After the altercation, Gasca fled the scene in her vehicle without contacting law enforcement but notified several individuals of the incident.

An investigation revealed Gasca's account to others, with one witness stating Gasca confessed to stabbing Johnson twice during a panic-stricken visit. Gasca later changed clothes at the witness's residence, with her torn shirt corroborating a physical altercation.

Mathis, during questioning, admitted to witnessing the altercation and stabbing Johnson once in the chest before pushing him to the ground.

Surveillance footage from Dollar General showed Gasca and Johnson arriving at the store without any visible altercation inside.

Johnson's body displayed multiple injuries, including stab wounds to various areas, abrasions, and a gash to the head and stomach.

Despite evidence of the altercation, forensic imaging failed to reveal physical injuries on Gasca's body.

Gasca was arrested on January 19, 2024, and released on April 13, 2024, pending trial scheduled for May 21, 2024. Mathis was arrested on December 27, 2023, and released on January 3, 2024.

Gasca initially faced a Murder charge but was indicted for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, while Mathis, initially arrested for Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution, was indicted for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
