Frontier Days at Ft. Concho Adapts Schedule to Anticipated Weather

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Fort Concho's much-anticipated Frontier Day festivities are adapting to unforeseen circumstances, shifting venues and rescheduling events due to anticipated inclement weather. The annual celebration, steeped in nearly five decades of tradition, will now take place primarily within the confines of the fort's Stables Hall, located at 210 Henry O. Flipper St.

With outdoor activities such as the vintage baseball game, living history camps, and pioneer lifeways being cancelled out of caution, organizers are ensuring that the spirit of Frontier Day remains undiminished. However, Saturday's Regional Cavalry Competition events, originally slated for the day, have been rescheduled to span from Wednesday to Friday.

Commencing on Saturday, April 20th, at the early hour of 7:30 a.m., the festivities will kick off with the Lions Club Pancake Breakfast, an institution within the Frontier Day tradition. Attendees can partake in the breakfast for $8 per person, setting the tone for a morning filled with exploration and enjoyment.

Despite the adjustments, the event promises an array of captivating experiences that pay homage to the region's rich agricultural and ranching heritage. From beekeeping demonstrations to sheep shearing showcases, from native plant exhibits to the craftsmanship of knifemaking, attendees will have ample opportunities to immerse themselves in the cultural tapestry of the frontier era. Additionally, activities like spinning, pioneer home cooking, and engaging in 1800s games and crafts will be available throughout the morning.

Entertainment will be in no short supply, with highlights including a presentation at the Mexican American Heritage House, a lively skit performed by the Concho Cowboy Company, and a Native American camp featuring Chief Broken Eagle. Attendees can also look forward to the mesmerizing skills of trick roper Doug Whittaker, adding a dash of excitement to the proceedings.
