ATHENS, Texas — In a surprising twist that has anglers reeling, the Lone Star State is shifting gears in its quest for the ultimate bass, announcing plans to downsize its famed breeding program to focus on smaller specimens.

The Sharelunker program, celebrated for its gargantuan bass, has hit a snag - or rather, a big mouthful. Over two decades, Texas has been breeding bass so massive that some waterways are now struggling to contain them. The O.H. Ivie reservoir, in particular, finds itself inundated with these colossal creatures, tipping the scales at over 13 pounds.

"The problem isn't that there's too many fish," laments angler Hank Baitman, "it's that they're too darn big! I had to mortgage my house just to buy a boat big enough to wrangle these monsters."

Indeed, the oversized bass are wreaking havoc on the angling economy. Anglers find themselves shelling out for bigger boats, beefier lines, and jumbo-sized lures just to keep up with the voracious appetites of these leviathans.

But relief is in sight. The Texas Parks Department recently made a splash with its announcement: the infamous 'lunker bunker' is bursting at the seams, not from an overflow of fish, but from the sheer size of its inhabitants. Hence, the state is reversing course, opting to breed smaller bass.

Details are scarce, but industry insiders predict a downsizing to three pounds or less. "It's a win-win," says tackle shop owner Sally Spinner. "Smaller bass mean they won't hog all the space in the lake during droughts, and they're much easier to fit in your cooler. Plus, they cook up just right on the grill."

Privately, some anglers are breathing sighs of relief, knowing they won't have to wrestle with behemoth bass for much longer.
