HOLLYWOOD— A trailer for Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, has released online.
The Odyssey is considered one of the tales that every story owes to and is second to only the Bible. Many have called it the one of the greatest stories ever written. Now, one of the best modern filmmakers, and perhaps one of the greatest of all time, is giving his interpretation of it.
Following Oppenheimer, a dialogue-driven three-hour film that nearly broke $1 billion, every film nerd was wondering what Nolan’s next would be. Just like Oppenheimer, the cast is staked with A-list stars like Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland.
The synopsis for Nolan’s The Odyssey reads:
"Odysseus, King of Ithaca, embarks on a perilous journey to return home after the Trojan War."
The Trojan War was won by the Greeks using the Trojan Horse to get inside the city. On Odysseus’s journey home, he faced many mythological monsters while his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus, fought off potential suitors trying to take Odysseus’s throne.
Nolan, known for giving his actors something real to act against, built an animatronic cyclops that portrays Polyphemus, who is the son of Poseidon. Odysseus also fought against cannibalistic giants, a six-headed beast called Scylla, and a giant whirlpool called Charybdis among others.
The Odyssey cast includes:
- Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting, The Martian) as Odysseus
- Anna Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises, Les Miserables) as Penelope
- Tom Holland (MCU’s Spider-Man films, Uncharted) as Telemachus
- Robert Pattinson (The Batman, Good Time) as Antinous
- Zendaya (Dune, Challengers) as Athena
- Charlize Theron (Monster, Mad Max: Fury Road) as Circe
- Jon Bernthal (Wolf of Wall Street, The Accountant) as Menelaus
- Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer, Good Time) as Agamemnon
- John Leguizamo (John Wick, The Menu) as Eumaneus
- Himesh Patel (Tenet, Don’t Look Up) as Eurylochus
- Mia Goth (Frankenstein, Pearl) as Melantho
The Odyssey also stars Lupita Nyong'O, speculated to portray Helen of Troy, Elliot Page (Inception), Bill Irwin (Interstellar), Samantha Morton (The Whale), Ryan Hurst (Remember the Titans) Jovan Adepo (Babylon), Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus), James Remar (Oppenheimer), and Will Yun Lee (Die Another Day).
The Odyssey is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026.
