Dangerous Jungle Parrots Seized at Mexican Border

NOGALES, Ariz. – In a recent operation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers and agriculture specialists stationed at the Area Port of Nogales have intercepted a significant quantity of protected avian species, marking a crucial victory in combating wildlife trafficking.

The bust unfolded when port personnel meticulously inspected a passenger vehicle passing through the Mariposa Crossing. Inside the vehicle, authorities uncovered a concealed crate containing 27 Amazon parrots destined for illegal entry into the United States. Among the seized birds were two lilac-crowned Amazon parrots (Amazona finschi, classified under CITES I) and 25 white-fronted Amazon parrots (Amazona albifrons, classified under CITES II). The avians, estimated to be valued between $800 to $3000 each, were carefully hidden beneath a dark cloth in the passenger seating area.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) affords protection to these species, recognizing the peril they face from illicit trade and exploitation. The intercepted parrots not only represent a flagrant violation of international conservation agreements but also underscore the ongoing battle against wildlife crime.

Beyond the economic value of these birds, there are broader implications at play. Parrots and other avian species can serve as vectors for various animal diseases, some of which pose a risk to human health. Upon discovery, the case was swiftly handed over to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which has initiated criminal proceedings against those involved in the smuggling operation.
