SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Central Bobcats and Lady Cats played their last home game of the 2024 regular season on Tuesday night against Odessa Permian. This was a key district matchup for both teams as both sat in second place in the district standings. The Lady Cats took care of business with a 2-0 win while the ‘Cats fell in penalty kicks after ending regulation tied with Mojo 1-1.
BOBCATS
Before the match began, both teams gathered in front of the crowd for a moment of silence for Jake Carrillo, a member of the Bobcats soccer team who passed away last week. Bobcats Head Coach Tony Vu gave an emotional speech about the young man and read his obituary before leading everyone on the field and in the stands in a moment of silence.
After the small memorial, the Cats and Mojo battled in earnest. Central needed a win to secure the better seeding heading into the playoffs, while the Panthers looked to stay perfect in district play. It was a great match from start to finish, with neither team giving any ground throughout. Central took the lead in the 35th minute off the foot of Andrew Espinosa. Jacob Castro collected the assist.
Permian battled back, however, as both teams scored a goal before the end of regulation. From there, the match went to penalty kicks. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the Panthers edged out Central there and took home the victory.
Despite the loss, the Bobcats still earned the right to represent District 2-6A in the playoffs.
LADY CATS
The Lady Cats battled the Lady Panthers in the early game for a shot at locking up playoff seedings. Central took a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. The Lady Cats gave their seniors one last home win before the end of the regular season with a 2-0 full-time victory.
The Bobcats and Lady Cats hit the road to Lubbock on Friday, March 8, to play their final district games against the Frenship Tigers and Lady Tigers. Both teams already locked up playoff spots. The playoffs begin next week.
