BIG SPRING, TX — The Reagan County Owls traveled to Big Spring on Tuesday, February 27, to play their 2A Region I Regional Quarterfinal matchup against the New Home Leopards.
A slow 3rd quarter put the Owls far behind the ball, but tough defense and solid 3-point shooting allowed Reagan County to climb back into it. In the end, a 28-point 4th quarter proved insufficient to beat the Leopards as the Owls fell in the Regional Quarterfinals, 59-51.
Check out highlights and Ryan Chadwick's analysis of the game below:
The Owls ran into trouble early thanks to some red-hot shooting from the Leopards. Turnovers and missed shots saw Reagan County fall behind 20-12 at the end of the first. The Owls defense woke up in the second quarter. Several steals led to open looks from beyond the arc. Those made threes let the Owls claw closer, writhing one point near the end of the half, but New Home still led 27-22 at the half.
New Home had to have had a truly special halftime pep-talk because the Leopards stormed out of halftime on a 16-2 run. Reagan County struggled to find open shots, and when they did, the shots were off the mark. Down 43-24 in the 4th quarter, the Owls did not give up. Kason Brown showed out with several made threes in a row to kickstart Reagan County on a run. The Owls’ defense came to life, causing several turnovers to quickly propel themselves back into the game. With less than two minutes to play, Reagan County trailed 50-49.
There were several opportunities for Reagan County to win this ball game. Missed free throws and no made shots in the last minute stymied the comeback. Despite dropping 28 points in the 4th quarter alone, Reagan County lost in the end 59-51.
Kason Brown led the Owls in scoring with 25 points. 18 of those points came in the 4th quarter alone. Brown still has another year under his belt and should make Reagan County extremely dangerous to deal with. Jarett Brown added 12 points in the effort, Aj Avalos had nine points, and Nicholas Franklin had three points.
