SAN ANGELO— A Louisiana man has been indicted in Tom Green County for a home invasion armed robbery and running from the police.
Melchizadek Carter, 29, was indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury in February on one count of Robbery and one count of Evading Arrest or Detention.
According to court documents, on December 8, 2023, at around 1:40 a.m., San Angelo Police responded to the 300 block of West 12th Street regarding a robbery that was in progress. When police arrived, they located the victim who said that two subjects had threatened him with a gun and took several items of property from his house.
During the preliminary investigation, officers had found a hi-point handgun that was believed to be dropped by one of the men who robbed the victim as eyeglasses that were stolen were also found near the weapon. His wallet was also found but had the cash removed.
The victim said that he allowed the defendant, identified as Carter, to stay at his house on December 6, 2023. On the night in question, the victim was woken up by Carter who was knocking on the door. When he did not allow Carter inside the residence, he attempted to push his was inside. He continued to hold the door shut when another man, who had concealed himself from the doorway, produced a handgun.
The second man cocked and pointed the gun at the victim until he allowed the two inside the residence. The victim was told that “if he moved, he would be smoked”. Then, the two began taking items from the house.
The victim said the gun was a charcoal colored Hi-Point and, due to his familiarity with firearms, knew it was a real gun and feared for his life. A picture of Carter was presented to law enforcement sent to him from Carter. The phone also showed one received call, two voice messages, and four text messages, who of which made a reference to a third party which allegedly told Carter that the police had responded to the victim’s house.
The weapon that was discovered was the weapon used in the robbery and it did have a 9mm round in the chamber. Though further investigation, it was found that Carter had used the last name, “Parker”.
On December 17, 2023, Carter was seen by a San Angelo Police Officer walking on South Fillmore Street. The officer knew that Carter had a warrant out for his arrest, so the officer activated his emergency lights, which Carter ignored and walked past the police unit. Then, the officer told him to stop, and Carter then decided to run north of South Fillmore and then west into the parking lot of The Village Shopping Center.
Another officer arrived and then Carter stopped running. He was then arrested and found to have a previous conviction for evading arrest or detention.
Carter was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on December 17, 2023, and is still an inmate being held on $250,000 bond. He is next due in court on April 16, 2024, for a pretrial hearing.
