Christoval Lady Cougars Emerge Victorious Over the Ropes Lady Eagles in Area Round

BIG SPRING— The Christoval Lady Cougars are heading into the next round of the Texas High School Basketball Playoffs after beating their competition, the Ropes Lady Eagles, in the Area Round, 40-32.

The Lady Eagles had a near comeback after the Lady Cougars held them scoreless from the field in the first half of the game and went into halftime up 20-7.

That is not a mistake. All of Ropes’ points in the first two quarters of the matchup came from the free throw line.

After one quarter of play, Christoval’s Halle “Full Metal” Hughes and Jordyn Walker had eight points combined and Braylee Silva added two. Ropes’ Madi Reyna had the only point for the Lady Eagles.

Into the second, the Grim Reaper, Madyson George, joined in on the scorebook, as did Sienna Gonzalez, each sinking a three-point shot and Hughes matched her first quarter with four points. Delyla Stark for the Lady Eagles was perfect from the line, hitting all four of her free throws as was Bailey Turner who went 2/2. But at the half, the Lady Cougars were in a double-digit lead, 20-7.

After halftime, George hit two three-point shots, Hughes and Walker were identical with two points apiece, and Sophia Nemec made one from the line. Ropes had another single digit quarter and hit two from the field, courtesy of Campbell Latta and Kandis Rodriguez. Latta also added two free throws to the board.

Entering the final quarter, Christoval was up 31-13 and the Lady Eagles probably caused Cougar fans to lean forward in their seats as they went on and had a 19-point fourth quarter. Ropes hit three three-pointers, two from Turner and one from Stark. Latta ended up sinking two for a total of four, Stark added two from the line, and Aubrey Bandy got involved with four points.

The Lady Cougars Silva tacked on two points to her total and Hughes and George five and two respectively.

When it was all said and done, the Lady Cougars emerged victorious, 40-32, holding off the Lady Eagles to move on to the third round. They will face off against the Sundown Lady Roughnecks, who beat the Miles Lady Bulldogs, 64-43.
