SAN ANGELO, TX — The No. 1 Angelo State Rams played their 2024 home opener against Cameron on Friday afternoon, February 9, at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium. The Rams’ bats were hot early as Angelo State built a sizable lead they held throughout the contest. Excellent pitching kept Cameron from mounting a comeback as Angelo State took the first of a four-game series 7-1.
Tripp Clark kickstarted the Rams’ offense in the 1st inning with a solo home run over the left-field fence. Cameron answered with a run in the top of the 2nd but would not score again for the remainder of the ball game. ASU regained the lead in the 3rd when Clark ground out to first but scored Ryder McDaniel in the process.
Weston Valasek built on the Rams’ lead in the 4th when a triple brought in two more before Blake Wilhoite scored Valasek on a sacrificial bunt to make the score 6-1. Jacob Guerrero added another run for Angelo State to secure a 7-1 victory in Game 1.
Braxton Pearson picked up the win on the Mound for ASU. He pitched seven innings and allowed one run on five hits. Angelo State returns to action on Saturday, February 9, for a double-header against Cameron. First pitch for Game 2 is scheduled for 1 p.m.
