Slow Start Dooms the 'Cats in District Opener

ODESSA, TX — The San Angelo Central Bobcats opened up District 2-6A play on Friday night on the road in Odessa. Central squared off against the rival Permian Panthers to see who would be in the top half of the district. A slow start to the 1st half put Central too far behind the ball to ever catch up, and Permian defended their home court for a 66-56 win.

The Bobcats began the game ice cold. Central only managed four points in the opening eight minutes and allowed Permian to build a 14-point lead. The ‘Cats woke up in the 2nd quarter. After some back-and-forth scoring, Kollin Allbright found his rhythm inside to bring the ‘Cats back into the game. Central would go on a 9-0 run to end the half to pull within seven points of Mojo at the break, 29-22.

Unfortunately for the Bobcats, they began the 2nd half almost as slow as the 1st. Permian outscored Central 12-6 in the first six minutes before the ‘Cats woke up again. The Bobcats would finish the final two minutes on a 6-3 run but trailed the Panthers by ten at the end of the 3rd Quarter.

The offense turned up in the 4th quarter, but Central never managed to claw any closer than six points of the lead. The defense on both sides became sloppy as the two teams each put up 22 points in the 4th quarter. Permian won in the end 66-56.

Squeaky English led the Bobcats with 21 points. Central returns home next Tuesday to host the Midland High Bulldogs. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
