No Blood No Foul; Irion County Lady Hornets Bury Blackwell in District Opener

MERTZON— Two types of Hornets went to war for The Hive when the Irion County Lady Hornets battled the Blackwell Lady Hornets and emerged victorious, 47-22, in their first district game.

The stingers came out as both sets of Hornets duked it out on the court, with the refs letting them play. A scary sight occurred in the first quarter when two girls collided, and Blackwell’s Kinley Cummings rose from the hardwood dripping blood from her head. She would get cleaned up and get right back in the battle. At halftime though, Irion County was up 31-11.

Irion County protected The Hive by finished off Blackwell, 47-22. Thanks in large part two a huge third quarter where IC put up 18 points followed by a 10-point fourth quarter.

They were sharpshooters from beyond the arch with seven three-point shots made as the ref’s attitude of letting the team play made it tough to get anything going under the basket. Berkley Callaway hit three threes in the first half. Kyleigh Yant and Baylee Rainey each sank one from downtown and in the fourth quarter, Rory Ward hit two.

The Irion County Lady Hornets are now 1-0 in district and take on the Robert Lee Lady Steers this coming Tuesday, January 9, 2024. The Blackwell Lady Hornets play their neighbors, the Bronte Longhorns next.
