AUSTIN – The Texas Workforce Commission welcomed its new Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth Ruggero Hughs of Austin. Hughs joins the three-member Commission for a six-year term and will serve nearly 500,000 Texas employer as an advocate. Her goal is to ensure employers’ concerns are considered in all Commission actions.
“I am truly honored to be given the opportunity to serve the people of Texas in this capacity,” said Hughs. “I look forward to making a positive impact at TWC and working closely with employers to strengthen the Texas workforce.”
Hughs will work together with fellow commissioners to determine workforce funding allocations and rule on unemployment and wage claim appeals among other duties.
“Commissioner Hughs brings a wealth of knowledge and experience,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton.”
Prior to her appointment, Hughs practiced private law and was the owner and managing partner of an award-winning film production company. In addition to her work in the private sector, Hughs served as the Director of Defense Litigation and managed the Civil Litigation Divisions at the office of the Texas Attorney General. Hughs also defended state agencies and employees in civil rights and employment litigation in state and federal courts, and provided employment advice to employers.
“Business in our great state will benefit from her expertise and the high standards set by her office and staff,” Congleton said.
