Teen Killed Handling Fireworks on New Year’s Day in Lubbock

 

LUBBOCK, TX — An 18-year-old man was killed New Year’s Day after being seriously injured in a fireworks accident in north Lubbock, police said.

The Lubbock Police Department said officers were dispatched around 7:21 p.m. Jan. 1 to a report of a person injured while handling fireworks near North Ulrich Avenue and Dartmouth Street.

Officers arrived to find the teen with critical injuries and began life-saving measures until emergency medical services arrived, according to police. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators determined the teen was with family and friends shooting fireworks in the street when a firework he was holding went off near his head, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.
