SAN ANGELO— A San Angelo woman has taken a plea deal for Manslaughter in the drowning death of a four-year-old at a local apartment complex.
Selena Baron, 28, has taken a plea deal after being indicted for Manslaughter. Back in June 2022, San Angelo Police were dispatched to the Resort at Riverside Apartment Complex, located on the 3300 block of North Bryant Boulevard, for a possible drowning. Once on scene, officers located a 4-year-old boy who was unconscious. First responders immediately began CPR and paramedics transported the boy to Shannon Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.
The child was later identified as Rodolfo Mercado IV.
Baron was indicted in February 2023 for Manslaughter. According to the indictment, Baron undid the life vest on Mercado and failed to properly secure the life saving device to the child.
Now, Baron has been sentenced to five years deferred adjudication. In the plea deal, the offense is listed as Manslaughter, to which Baron pleaded guilty, and she will also have a $1,000 fine.

PermalinkI've known several people who were far less culpable in the death of another in Tom Green Co. who received 10 years probated for manslaughter. Seems like 10 years would've been appropriate here seeing as a probationer is eligible for release from probation after serving half their sentence out. Potentially, this woman could be off probation in 2 1/2 years.
