Woman Indicted in Apartment Complex Drowning Death of Toddler

SAN ANGELO‑ A San Angelo woman has been indicted for manslaughter after a toddler drowned at an area apartment complex last June.

Selena Banon, 27, has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for manslaughter of a 4-year-old toddler. According to the indictment, on June 9, 2022, Banon allegedly undid a strap on the life vest worn by the toddler and failed to properly supervise him.

According to the San Angelo Police Department, on June 9, 2022, at around 5:30 p.m., police were dispatched to the 3300 block of N. Bryant Blvd, or the Resort at Riverside, for a possible drowning.

Once on scene, police discovered a 4-year-old boy unconscious. CPR was immediately performed on the child and when paramedics arrived on scene, took the child to Shannon Medical Center where the toddler was pronounced dead.

The child was later identified through GoFundMe as Rodolfo Mercado IV.

The indictment did not specify if Banon is related to the child in anyway.
