SAN ANGELO – Airmen at Goodfellow Air Force Base showcased total force integration during the latest active shooter emergency response exercise on November 16, as per information released by the base Thursday.
These exercises play a crucial role in aligning all facets of Goodfellow to respond cohesively to disasters under a unified command structure. The 17th Training Wing remains dedicated to upholding the highest levels of preparedness, prioritizing the safety of its personnel and the local San Angelo community.
The drill aimed to evaluate and strengthen the base's response capabilities in the face of a real-world threat.
Various scenarios were simulated to replicate the unpredictable nature of an active shooter situation. Base personnel coordinated responses, procedures, and communication protocols. The simulation allowed the Wing Inspection Team to assess security measures' effectiveness and pinpoint areas for improvement.
Marcus Penn, 17th TRW Inspector General, emphasized, “Repeating this exercise enhances our communication and operational efficiency. Regular drills help identify any operational gaps to ensure our readiness to preserve lives during a crisis.”
Col. Christopher Corbett, 17th Training Wing deputy commander, underscored the significance of routine exercises. “Drills like these are crucial in preparing our Airmen for any eventuality. It’s a responsibility we owe to the American public.”
At Goodfellow, collaborative efforts streamline resource integration in emergencies. These exercises further refine the base’s ability to respond effectively to security threats by uniting multiple units in a joint, well-trained response.
“Regularly practicing these scenarios sharpens our skills and instills a culture of alertness and readiness among our personnel,” stated Lt. Col. Joshua Carroll, 17th Civil Engineering Squadron commander. “The objective is to ensure everyone is equipped to act decisively in high-pressure situations.”
