Area Playoffs Bring Brock & Muleshoe to San Angelo Stadium

SAN ANGELO— Two 3-A high school football powerhouses are squaring off tonight at San Angelo Stadium in a playoff game.

The Brock Eagles and the Muleshoe Mules are playing tonight in San Angelo Stadium at 5:00 p.m. The Eagles have been to two straight state championship games under third year head coach Billy Mathis.

Mathis is 34-9 with Brock, which made it to state in 2021 and 2022 but lost both games to Lorena and Franklin respectively.

Brock’s quarterback Brody Woods has thrown for 1,735 yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. On the ground, Woods, Brett Tutter, and Vance Guthrie tear it up with 881 yards, 642 yards, and 549 yards respectively.

Woods does have a couple of favorite weapons out wide in Carson Finney and Britton Burrows, who have 1,132 yards combined and 12 touchdowns.

Defensively, the Eagles get after it and have four players with over 100 tackles in Cooper Massey, Hyatt Dunaway, Cam Harris, and Luke Cearley. Brock also basically lives in the opponents’ backfield as they have 45 sacks, nine from Hunter Fay and eight from Harris.

Sophomore Colt Matlock leads the team with five interceptions and 10 passes defended, followed by Finney and Cale Bramblett, who have three interceptions apiece.

Muleshoe was on the receiving end of a Brock beating last year at this same stage of the playoffs when the Eagles beat the Mules 57-20, so this will be a little bit of a revenge game for the Mules.

Junior quarterback Nathan Martens has thrown for over 2,000 yards this year with 19 touchdowns to six interceptions. The Mules have a two-headed beast on the ground in Daniel Sianez and freshman Josue Sigala, who have 38 touchdowns and 2,350 yards combined.

Martens spreads the ball around quite well and has four receivers he likes. Ramzee Martinez, Sabastian Kirven, Mauricio Herrera, and Yahir Quezada have 1,926 yards combined.

Noah Cantu and Aaron Morales lead the Mules in tackles with 139 and 115 respectively. The Mules also have two players who lead in sacks with five apiece from Kirven and Jonathon Salinas.

Sigala has five interceptions on the year which is good enough for a third of the interceptions for Muleshoe. Martinez is next with three.

The Brock Eagles and the Muleshoe Mules are matching up at San Angelo Stadium at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
