TAMPA, FL — Former Texas A&M Head Football Coach and current Maryland Co-offensive Coordinator Kevin Sumlin was arrested on Sunday, October 22, on suspicion of driving under the influence in Florida.
According to the Hillsborough Country Sherriff’s Office, Sumlin was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail after he was arrested late last Saturday night, October 21. ESPN reported that Sumlin was stopped by local authorities while driving along a highway east of downtown Tampa in Florida. The former Aggie head football coach was arrested, booked, and released before 9 a.m. on Sunday morning after he posted bond.
Sumlin refused a breathalyzer test during the traffic stop. He faces a second-degree misdemeanor charge, which can mean up to 60 days in jail or a fine of up to $500.

Sumlin accumulated a 51-26 overall record at Texas A&M during his tenure as head coach. He was fired from A&M following the 2017 season. He coached Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel while the quarterback attended Texas A&M. He moved on to coach at Houston and then Arizona after he left the Aggies. He was fired from his last stint at Arizona after the shortened 2020 season. He then was the general manager and head coach of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers for the 2022 football season before he joined the Maryland coaching staff earlier this year.
The Maryland football program released a statement and said that they were aware of the situation. The Terrapins currently sport a 5-2 overall record and 2-2 in BIG10 conference play. The Terps travel to Illinois on Saturday, October 28, to play Northwestern at 11 a.m.
