Fiery Crash Involving a Vehicle and a Tree Shuts Down US 67

SAN ANGELO, TX — Traffic on US 67 northbound, near the intersection with the Douglas Loop leading towards Miles, came to a standstill for approximately one hour as first responders worked to understand the circumstances of a car colliding with a tree.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers are spearheading the investigation into this single-vehicle accident, which resulted in a fiery explosion. The incident involved what appeared to be a small passenger van or compact SUV crashing into a tree located well off the south side of the highway. The vehicle was entirely engulfed in flames, making it challenging to identify the make and model once the fire was extinguished. The tree itself also caught fire during the collision.

Emergency responders reported over the radio that an occupant of the vehicle had sustained two broken legs and was unconscious. CPR was being administered to the crash victim inside the ambulance. Only one individual appeared to have been involved in the accident and was subsequently transported to the Shannon Emergency Room. Prior to the arrival of medics and first responders, numerous passersby stopped to offer assistance as best they could.

The Texas DPS has indicated that they will withhold further details about the crash until they ascertain the condition of the victim and notify the next of kin.

The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m., just before darkness set in. Weather conditions were clear, and the roadways were dry. The tree that was struck appears to have been the only one in close proximity to the road in that area.
