WALL, TX — The Wall Hawks lost a heartbreaker to their rivals, the Mason Punchers, a week ago. After such a tough loss, how a team performs in the next matchup will say much about what kind of football team Wall will be for the rest of the season. The Hawks open up District 2-3A play this Friday, October 6, against the Grape Creek Eagles in Grape Creek and hope to correct the mistakes that cost them against Mason.
Wall’s Head Coach Houston Guy met with San Angelo LIVE!’s Ryan Chadwick after practice on Wednesday to discuss the loss against Mason and what he expects from his team against Grape Creek on Friday. Watch the full interview below:
“We’re going to work on the Hawks,” Coach Guy said. “We know we have Grape Creek on Friday, but we are fixing the things that the Hawks are doing. We’re not overlooking Grape Creek, but there are issues that we had on Friday night that we’ve fixed this week at practice.”
So, Coach Guy says the Hawks’ latest woes are internal ones. The coaching staff at Wall is some of the best in the state, so if Coach Guy says that internal issues need to be addressed, then Hawks’ fans can rest easy knowing that Wall will look like a different team come Friday.
Wall also needs to find a way to replace one of its biggest contributors on both sides of the ball. Wall’s receiver and one of the best guys in its secondary, Ryan Allen, suffered an injury against the Punchers and is done for the year. Coach Guy sang his praises and said that there is no way to replace a player like that completely. Luckily for the Hawks, their defense still sports one of the best rosters in the state and will be a massive headache for Grape Creek.
The Grape Creek Eagles team finished winless last season and only put up 72 points all year. Head Coach Tanner Thiel said before the season began that this team would be better, and he was right. Despite entering this matchup with the Wall Hawks with an 0-5 overall record, the Eagles have already almost matched their point total (62) this season with last year. These Eagles continue to improve every week and look to make Friday's game a tough matchup on a reeling Hawks team.
The Wall Hawks (3-2) open up district play against the Grape Creek Eagles (0-5) on Friday, October 6, in Grape Creek. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
