Cowboys Slip Out of the Top 5 After Loss

FRISCO, TX — The new NFL Power rankings dropped from NFL.com on Tuesday, and the Dallas Cowboys are officially out of the Top 5 after losing to the Cardinals on Sunday. Ranked number four after Week 3, the Dallas Cowboys took a tumble to number six in Week 4.

The Miami Dolphins captured the No. 1 spot after their 70-20 thrashing of the Denver Broncos, San Francisco fell to No. 2, Kansas City came in at No. 3, Philadelphia finished at No. 4, and the Buffalo Bills rounded out the Top 5. While it comes as no surprise that the Dallas Cowboys fell, it is hard to say that the Bills are a better team than Dallas after the Cowboys’ performance in Weeks 1 and 2.

Dallas came into the desert as 13-point road favorites against the Cardinals but did not live up to expectations. The loss of Trevon Diggs for the season this week definitely hurt the Cowboys, but the defense as a unit looked awful all game. Dallas yielded 222 yards to the Cardinals’ ball carriers after completely shutting down Saquon Barkley and Breece Hall in the first two weeks. In the secondary, new blood struggled early without Diggs, and veteran Stephon Gilmore was beaten on more than one occasion. The only aspect of the Dallas defense that remained dominant was the pass rush led by the leading NFL MVP candidate, Micah Parsons.

While some falloff in the secondary was expected without Diggs headed into Week 3’s matchup, Dallas needs to play much better moving forward. All the hype surrounding the team on both sides of the ball must be realized. Dak Prescott threw a game-sealing interception in Sunday’s contest on a day that Dallas outgained Arizona but still lost by 12 points. The main positive takeaway on offense was the performance from Tony Pollard. The Cowboys running back carried the rock 23 times for 122 yards for his first game over 100 yards this season.

The Dallas Cowboys look to get their season back on track this Sunday, October 1, at home against Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:25 p.m.
