CHICAGO, IL — A controversial end to the Rangers and White Sox game on Tuesday night have many MLB (Major League Baseball) fans scratching their heads. An overturned call in the 8th inning would give the Chicago White Sox their winning run and cause Texas Rangers’ Manager Bruce Bochy to blow his top. Chicago beat the Rangers on Tuesday, 7-6.
After rallying back in the 8th inning with three runs, Chicago’s Zach Remillard singled in Elvis Andrus with the go-ahead run on a play that had to go to video review before the MLB sent in the “correct” call. The Umpire originally called Andrus out at the plate. Rangers Catcher Jonah Heim received the throw from Travis Jankowski in the outfield with time to spare to tag Andrus out. After review, the MLB determined that Heim “blocked the plate illegally,” and the call was overturned.
Bochy came out of the dugout after the decision to argue the call, but tempers flared, and the umpires tossed the Ranger’s Skipper.
“I’m dumbfounded. It’s absolutely one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen,” Bochy said in an interview after the game. “And it was done by replay? I just don’t get it. I don’t care how many times [the MLB] tries to explain it.”
Bochy animately argued with the home plate umpire before he left the game. Heim stood dumbfounded as he also tried to argue his case. Calling Andrus safe because he beat the throw might be one thing, but the overturned call came at catcher interference. With instant replay and slow motion being analyzed in the booth, the decision raised some eyebrows. Check out the play here:
“You can’t do that in that situation,” Bochy continued. “It’s a shame. It’s embarrassing, really. There was never any contact with the catcher. It was a sweep tag. I don’t get it.”
"I asked the umpire what I could have done differently," the catcher Heim said. "I set up on the corners. I even backed up. I don't know what else to do. It's upsetting. I don't know how you can block the plate from behind the plate."
White Sox Closer Kendall Graveman pitched a scoreless 9th inning to secure the win. It was his 7th save.
People can claim that Texas still had three outs to work with in the 9th, but after that call, the loss felt inevitable. The Rangers still control the AL West despite the 7-6 loss to Chicago on Tuesday night. Texas is 4-6 in their last ten games after a hot start to start the season. Up next, the Rangers wrap up their three-game series against the White Sox on Wednesday, June 21, at 7:10 p.m.
