SAN ANGELO – Tuesday was remarkable in San Angelo history because the record all time temperature of 114 degrees was reached mid afternoon. It's never been this hot here before.
But the rest of the story is that the temperature topped 100 degrees before 11 a.m. and didn't fall below 100 degrees until 11 p.m. last night; 12 hours of temperatures above 100 degrees. And Wednesday should follow that pattern with approximately 11 hours of temperatures above 100 degrees. The last time temperatures were comparable to this record heat was in 1907.
That's why the National Weather Service office in San Angelo has extended the Excessive Heat Warning though 9 p.m. Wednesday.
An Excessive Heat Warning means extreme temperatures for prolonged periods of time threaten the health and life of humans and pets.
Experts recommend you stay inside an air-conditioned room if possible during the heat of the day. If you must venture outdoors, wear long sleeved, loose fit clothing, a hat and gloves and limit exposure to sunlight. If you must work or travel outdoors, take plenty of breaks in the shade, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, check on friends and neighbors, put off outdoor activities that are not vital.
Outdoor pets need special attention during prolonged periods of extreme heat. Make sure they have plenty of shade, fresh water, and access to food. Better yet, bring your outdoor pets inside.
And never, ever leave a child or a pet in a locked vehicle in any weather. It's a crime.
The Texas electric grid held again as state officials said it would. If you're worried about the grid, unplug your electric vehicle or your neighbor's electric vehicle to conserve electricity. Wait until weather conditions are not too hot or too cold to charge your EV.
Check back often for updates and instructions.
