SAN ANGELO, TX – A Marine veteran from San Angelo has been seriously injured while fighting in the war in Ukraine, and his family is in need of assistance.
According to a GoFundMe page published on June 9, 2023, Michael 'Monty' Montoya, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Humanitarian, was clearing a minefield in Ukraine. On June 7, 2023, Monty suffered a severe injury from an improvised explosive device.
As a result, Monty lost a significant portion of his right foot and is also dealing with chemical burns, shrapnel damage, and other injuries. He is currently in a Ukrainian hospital, attempting to return to the United States for surgery. The family is reaching out to the public for support in bringing him home.
"We are asking for help to raise funds for his medical needs, transportation, lodging, and the various resources we will require to assist him upon his return to the United States," said Laura, Monty's wife, in the GoFundMe campaign. "Some of the funds will also be allocated to an amazing organization called Tip of The Spear."
Monty is a graduate of San Angelo Central and enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school.

My name is Laura Montoya. This page has been created for my husband, Michael. Most people know him as Monty. He is an USMC Veteran and EOD humanitarian volunteer who was injured by an IED blast while clearing a minefield in Ukraine. On June 7, 2023 our world changed when we were informed he was in an ambulance on the way to the hospital in Ukraine. He suffered immediate damage to include traumatic amputation of most of his right foot, chemical burns, shrapnel damage, and more. Michael is currently in medical hands in Ukraine and we are working on moving him out of country and west towards other surgeons. We are asking for help to raise funds for medical needs, transportation, lodging, and for the many things we will need to help him when he returns back to the United States. Some of the funds will also be allocated to an amazing organization called Tip of The Spear. Due to the fast actions and access to lifesaving medical field gear my husbands life was saved. We want to make sure that no one steps into a minefield without the basic equipment they need to help a called brother or sister. Michael is an absolutely a loving husband, a proud father of 3, a son, a brother, a USMC Veteran, a humanitarian and will give everything he can to help others. Now we are the ones who need to ask for help.
