WATCH: Representative Darby Addresses Property Appraisal Crisis

SAN ANGELO – State Representative Drew Darby joined San Angelo LIVE! Wednesday evening for a wide ranging discussion on the current property appraisal crisis in Texas and urged property owners to work the process by protesting unfair or out-of-line appraised values.

Texas residents recently received notices of the value the state places on their property.  That value is assessed by appraisal districts under the direction of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts and regulated by the Texas Legislature.  Those property appraisals are used by local taxing authorities like counties, cities and especially school districts to develop an annual operating budget and set a tax rate.

Many property owners in Tom Green County were shocked by unbelievable property appraisals that were much higher that the previous year.  In fact, over 1,000 residents showed up at a Tax Appraisal Review Board organizational meeting at the Central Appraisal District office recently and were turned away because the meeting was not about their appraisals.  Many left angry and confused.

San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter was one of those who attended the meeting.  The Mayor joined San Angelo LIVE! Wednesday evening to detail her objections to the appraisals and the system.  Mayor Gunter called the appraisal situation a 'Crisis.'

Rep. Darby agreed saying home owners needed to protest their property appraisals.  Here's Rep. Darby from our livestream Wednesday:

Representative Darby went on to say there is a process that property owners need to follow but they must act before the June 1 deadline.  Here's Darby's recommendation for property owners who disagree with the recent appraisals of their property:

Darby was joined Wednesday night on the San Angelo LIVE! Daily News Special Report by Mayor Gunter, Tom Green County Judge Lane Carter, San Angelo ISD CFO Dr. Merl Brandon, and San Angelo restauranteur Tim Condon.  TGC Appraisal District Chief Tyler Johnson was invited but did not participate in the special report.
