NEW YORK, NY — The NFL took another major step into the streaming industry on Monday. They announced that one of this season’s playoff games will be streamed exclusively on a digital platform. The league and NBCUniversal announced Monday that the Saturday night game on wild card weekend will be on Peacock.
The Peacock exclusive game on January 13 would start at 7:15 or 7:30 p.m. CST. NBC stations will broadcast the game in the markets of the two teams in question and will be available on mobile devices through the NFL+ package on the NFL app. If people want to watch the game and don’t live in the area, they will have to pay $4.99 for a Peacock subscription.
“We had our first season with Amazon (this past year), and I think that with the digital platforms, we’re ready for live sports at scale. And the next step is to step into the postseason,” said Hans Schroeder, NFL executive vice president and chief operating officer of NFL Media. “We like the plan that Peacock and NBC put together. In this case, knowing we're going to have a bigger audience and focused on having the widest reach possible across each platform.”
The NFL seems to be gravitating towards streaming services more and more each season. Last year, the NFL sold the streaming rights for Thursday Night Football exclusively to Amazon Prime Video. In addition to the playoff game, Peacock will also have one exclusive regular season game on December 23 when the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams play each other on Saturday night.
The 2023 NFL Season marks the first in an 11-year contract with NBC. Between Peacock and NBC’s other broadcasts, the network will have three playoff games during the postseason’s first weekend.
