MERTZON, TX — Irion County’s Head Football Coach, Don Coffell, announced on Tuesday, May 9, that he’s hanging it up after this school year. Coffell led the Hornets to a 12-1 (4-0) overall record and a program-best State Semifinal finish this past football season. Unfortunately, Irion County fell just short of the title game to Abbott in the semis, 88-60, but the Hornets still had their best season in program history.
Irion County hired Coffell to take over the six-man transition back in 2019. Before his time in Mertzon, Coffell served as the head coach for Iredell from 1996 to 2011. Coffell compiled an 81-76 overall record before stepping down to fill an assistant coach position from 2012 to 2019. Coffell coached almost every sport at the high school level and continued to do so at Irion County. He served as the assistant basketball coach under Coach John Morrow at Irion County, where, once again, the Hornets fell one game short of the state tournament.
Coffell compiled a 36-9 overall record in his time with the Hornets as Head Football Coach. The Hornets made the playoffs in all four years that Coffell was in charge.

Don Coffell coached his son, Trevin Coffell, through his senior year before he made the decision to retire. Trevin was an integral part of both the Basketball and Football programs. He also was San Angelo LIVE!’s All-Cover1 MVP for basketball. Trevin plans to attend Sul Ross State University in the fall to play basketball.
When asked about the decision to retire, Coffell said he plans to enjoy retirement and wants to watch his son play basketball in college. He also noted that the Hornets’ Defensive Coordinator, Shawn Harrison, will be the one to take over as Irion County’s head coach. No official announcement has been made about Harrison taking over.
