SAN ANGELO, TX — Matt Jones, TLCA Eagles head football and baseball coach, announced his resignation this week. Athletic director Kent Sherrill now needs a new coach to lead the Eagles in football and baseball. Jones led TLCA to the playoffs in football this past season and set a school record in baseball for most wins in a season this spring.
Jones says he’s accepted the defensive coordinator position out in Water Valley with their football program. Water Valley recently promoted interim head football coach Aaron Witmire to the athletic director and head football coach after Charles Boles stepped down. Boles announced his retirement after he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins’s Lymphoma early in the school year.
Jones worked for the Miles football program before TLCA hired him in 2020. Jones began his coaching career with the Eagles back in 2013 before moving on to other positions in the Concho Valley. He took over a struggling TLCA football program that had just moved up into 3A. After two rough seasons, going 0-10 in both years, the Eagles showed major growth in 2022, finishing with a 4-7 overall record. The Eagles made the playoffs for the first time in school history as a 3A football team under Coach Jones and for the second time ever overall.
While Water Valley gains an excellent coordinator in Jones, the Eagles need to find a coaching candidate that will prevent TLCA from taking a major step backward. Athletic Director Kent Sherrill says that TLCA will begin interviews for a new coach soon.
