SAN ANGELO, TX — It’s that time of year again for youngsters from around the San Angelo area to gather at San Angelo Stadium for the annual Little Olympics put on by the Kiwanis Club of San Angelo. The historic two-day event began on Wednesday, May 3, and concludes on Thursday evening, May 4. Competitors compete in several track and field events that will prepare them for the sport as they get older.
The San Angelo Kiwanis Club is a service organization whose motto is "Serving the Children of the World." Per their website, “The San Angelo Kiwanis Club is extremely proud of our "signature" project, the Little Olympics, which involves hundreds of elementary children every year in a field day at San Angelo Stadium.”
“In 2016, we celebrated the 75th year of sponsoring the Little Olympics. With assistance and support from San Angelo ISD, and community volunteers, many from Angelo State University, local school campuses, and Goodfellow Air Force Base, we look forward to continuing this legacy for many years to come.”
The competition is available to all schools in the San Angelo area for grades 4-6. The middle schoolers completed their contest on Wednesday, May 3. They competed in the shot put, running long jump, the 60 and 70-yard dash, and the 300-yard relay. On Thursday, May 4, all the elementary schools will participate in their events. Events include flexed arm hang for the girls, chin-ups for the boys, running long jump, the 60 and 70-yard dash, and the 300-yard relay. The competition begins at 3:30 p.m. Admission to San Angelo Stadium is free.
The meet opens up with a parade of all participants around the track at San Angelo Stadium. The parade begins at 3:40 p.m. Participation in events will occur immediately after the parade.
