SAN ANGELO, TX — It took last-minute heroics from the number one ranked team in the nation to secure victory on Friday night, April 23, at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium. The No. 1 Angelo State Rams defeated the No. 8 St. Edwards Hill Toppers in extra innings 7-6.
After the Rams trailed St. Edwards 6-3, entering the bottom of the 9th inning, the Rams’ mostly silent bats finally woke up. Kamden Kaden led off with a walk and then to second on a ground out. Thomas Cain then singled Kaden to third before Tripp Clark drove in the first run. However, with two outs on the board and still down by two runs, the Rams quickly ran out of options.
Then Austin Beck stepped up to the plate. He drove a 2-RBI line drive to right-center field to tie the game. The scheduled firework show for after the game had to wait a little longer as the Angelo State and St. Edwards headed to extra innings.
After a scoreless 10th inning, Cain, Guerrero, and Clark solidified the win for the Rams. Cain led off with a walk before Guerrero doubled to move him to third. The hero, Tripp Clark, singled to the outfield to score Cain and complete the comeback. The Rams won this one in 11 innings, 7-6.
Jackson Haga picked up the win, pitching 2 2/3 innings with only one hit while striking out four batters.
The Rams improve to 37-6 overall on the year and 35-6 in Lone Star Conference play. Angelo State’s homestand continues against St. Edwards continues on Saturday, April 22, with a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 4:00, with the second game following immediately after. Tickets can be purchased at the gate at Foster Field.
