ENGLEWOOD, CO — The most famous person in Denver Broncos history is parting ways with the organization. Hall of Fame and Super Bowl Champion Quarterback John Elway is leaving the Broncos after his contract expired.
Elway played or worked for the Broncos’ organization for 28 seasons. He played for 16 years and made five Super Bowl appearances as the Broncos’ Hall of Fame quarterback from 1983-98. Elway won Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII with Denver. After he retired from the game, he served as the Broncos' general manager from 2011 to 2020. As general manager, he helped lead the Broncos to another championship in 2015 with Peyton Manning in Superbowl 50. Elway moved to a consulting role in 2021 and served as the organization's President of Football Operations.

Elway’s contract with the Broncos expired at the conclusion of the 2022 season, and the NFL Network’s Jesse Palmer reported that the team would not be renewing the deal.
"I've enjoyed the relationship with the Broncos for a long, long time," Elway told 9NEWS, Denver’s NBC affiliate. “They’re in great hands. I still plan on being around to watch and be a resource for [CEO] Greg [Penner] or [general manager] George [Paton] if I can.”

There are heavy expectations for the Broncos in the upcoming 2023 season. Denver hopes that adding Head Coach Sean Peyton will fix the woes that plagued quarterback Russel Wilson last season. However, John Elway finally gets to relax and watch the Broncos’ 2023 season however he wants.
“I’ll still be around as a resource,’’ Elway said. “I’ve been with the Denver Broncos for so long that it was nice to have some sort of connection which is what I wanted. I didn’t want an obligation. I’m getting a little older, and I want to be able to do some things I haven’t done. I’m ready to have a flexible schedule. If there’s something I can help them with, I’d do that.”
